R&B star The Weeknd and rapper Belly have cancelled their performance on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show because Donald Trump was also set to appear on the show.
The pair were due to perform their 2015 collaboration track “Might Not,” but dropped out because they didn’t want to share a stage with the Republican presidential nominee following his controversial statements and opinions regarding race, religion and immigration.
Belly commented on the decision not to appear, saying:
“I create songs people go to sleep and wake up to, songs that they fall in love to. For me, being Muslim and being somebody that appreciates my access here in America, I love the fact that I’m able to be here. To play my part in this business is a privilege and a beautiful thing. The fact that I could lose that ability through the actions of someone such as Donald Trump isn’t right to me. At all.”
Trump has been chastised for a number of, let’s say, divisive comments made during his campaign regarding women, refugees, immigrants and Muslims. He said some Mexican immigrants in the U.S. illegally are “rapists,” and he called for a ban on Muslim immigration into the United States.
We can only respect The Weeknd and Belly for their decision, but whether Trump and his supporters will give a jot is doubtable.
Tupac Shakur warned us about Donald Trump all the way back in 1992.
