Burgeoning Brooklyn rapper Desiigner has burst onto the scene in a big way, in large part due to Kanye West taking him under his wing, as well as in addition to his smash hit, “Panda,” which owned the charts for quite some time and is still being blasted at virtually every nightclub across the globe.
If you’re even remotely familiar with the song — which again, you should be — then you know the major recurring line of “I got broads in Atlanta.” But in a recent interview with Billboard, the young artist revealed that he has never even been to ATL and those “broads” are simply one broad that he’s been in contact with via the Internet.
In an excerpt from the conversation, the publication revealed “I got broads in Atlanta,” the opening line to Desiigner’s Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 “Panda,” is simple, memorable, irresistible — and not totally true. “I’ve never been to Atlanta,” he admits sheepishly. Barely old enough to be called a millennial, the Brooklyn rapper born Sidney Selby III, 19, cites a more prosaic inspiration: a girl he met on Facebook. “We never met in person,” he says. “She just said she was from ATL, so I was like, ‘All right — I got broads in Atlanta.’ It’s real life, you feel me? I put real-life sh*t in my songs.”
Fortunately for Desiigner, “Panda” is already such a huge success that we don’t see this particular embellishment hurting his plays and the popularity of the track in general.
But to find out exactly what the rapper is saying in the somewhat confusing track, watch and listen as Desiigner reads his lyrics to “Panda.” Afterwards, peep our recent video with the Brooklyn artist:
