For over 50 years, Dieter Rams has left an ineradicable mark on product design and the world at large with his iconic work at Braun and Vitsoe.

You might not realize it, but the objects Dieter has designed have touched the lives of millions of people. Many of us have had a Braun coffeemaker, shaver, stereo, calculator, speakers or alarm clock. Or an Oral-B toothbrush. Or any of the hundreds of products Rams has designed throughout his career. Now, finally, Rams will be the recipient of a feature length documentary about his life and work.

Simply titled Rams, the film will be directed by Gary Hustwit, the documentary filmmaker behind Helvetica, Objectified and Urbanized, who is currently raising funds to finish the movie on Kickstarter.

According to Hustwit, Rams is a notoriously private person, but he hit off with him while shooting a scene from Objectified. The film has already been in the works for a year and Hustwit hopes to both showcase Rams’ astonishing work, and rid people of some misconceptions about him:

“There’s this aura around Dieter of, you know, very iron-willed, dictatorial. Then when you meet him he’s completely the opposite… He’s an 84 year old German man, so he’s still a little bit cantankerous.”

Head over to Kickstarter to donate, and watch the trailer for Rams below.

After you’ve finished, here are the 10 designers you need to know from NYCxDESIGN.
