It’s all too easy to get nostalgic for your teenage years and all the fun that came with them without thinking about all the mountains of crap and angst that came with it. And let's be honest, there was a lot of crap and angst. A particularly excruciating form of this adolescent angst is explored in The Edge of Seventeen, a dark comedy that seems like our generation’s answer to the classic John Hughes films of the ‘80s.
The film stars Hailee Steinfeld (of True Grit fame) as Nadine, a hopelessly awkward girl stuck with a twin brother who is the perfect high school football star. As if that wasn’t bad enough, she then has to deal with said brother stealing away her best and only friend to become his new popular girlfriend. Woody Harrelson rounds out the cast as her grumpy teacher/confidant who trades barbs over lunch breaks, a far cry from the wilder roles of his past.
It seems like a well-worn, rudimentary plot of your standard teen comedy, but as the trailer shows, The Edge of Seventeen explores concerns of the millennial teenage girl in a way that feels fresh and relevant. We’ve all accidentally sent our crush a Facebook message asking him to kiss our tits in the back of a pet store, right? Right?
Look out for The Edge of Seventeen comes to theaters later this year.
