Where form meets function

Apple has replaced its gun emoji with a harmless toy water pistol amid growing concern of shootings in the U.S.

The shootings of unarmed black men, police officers, and individuals opening fire in nightclubs and public parties have led the tech giant to enter the gun violence debate. Reflecting a growing despair in America and worldwide, the gun emoji gun will be replaced with a friendlier-looking water pistol. In place of the old black and silver revolver is a bright green and orange water gun – just like the one you used to use as a kid.

The change, which will come into effect in September when iOS 10 is launched, was announced as Apple released 100 new emoji, including a rainbow flag, female athletes, police officers and construction workers and single-parent families. Apple, alongside Microsoft, also played a major role in removing a rifle from a list of potential emoji additions for all platforms, including Android.

Apple’s decision to replace the revolver comes shortly after Microsoft changed its toy gun to resemble a real-life pistol.

Here’s everything else coming to iPhone and iPad with iOS 10.
