Design
Where form meets function

As we are just days away from the opening ceremony for the Rio Olympics, here we get a look at a pair of massive installations that artist JR has contributed to the Brazilian city. The works coincide with the French creative’s ongoing “Inside Out” series. Accordingly, JR has depicted two beastly athletic figures, placed atop medal poles in dramatic locations within the seaside city.

The first sculpture can be seen atop the roof of a residential complex, in turn depicting a leaping athlete. According to JR’s Instagram, the figure represents “Mohamed YOUNES IDRISS, 27, from SUDAN. He lives and trains in Cologne, Germany. He missed out on qualification for the 2016 Rio Olympics but he is there some how.”

The next piece of art is positioned near the city’s Barra neighborhood. This installation highlights a diver leaping into an area of the ocean in the distance.
