Whether it was at a college party or after a long day at a poorly-paid job, we’ve all drunk cheap vodka — after all, not all of us can afford a Ciroc habit like DJ Khaled’s.

Conventional wisdom tells us that the taste is awful and that it will leave you with the devil of all hangovers the next day, but is that really true? To find out, Playboy roped in its booze expert, Jason Horn, to blind taste a handful of them.

Rather than opting for the standard procedure of masking a potentially horrific taste with orange juice, Red Bull, or Mountain Dew like the rest of us, Horn tests them all them straight-up — no ice, no water — to find out which one gives you best bang for your buck.

“What you’re looking for in a good vodka is something that’s basically inoffensive,” Horn says in the video. “You don’t want any off flavors, off smells, never anything bitter, never anything harsh, and it really shouldn’t burn going down.”

Horn tastes five vodkas that all cost $12 or less including Smirnoff, Svedka, UV, Popov, and Pinnacle. Watch the above video to find out which one you stock up on.
