Things just keep getting better for Samsung. After its premier device, the Galaxy Note7, started exploding shortly after its public release, the South Korean company was forced to issue a worldwide recall accounting for 2.5 million phones. Now, following more reports of fires, Samsung has had to halt all sales of the replacement units, which were supposedly safe.
The tech giant is also urging owners of the Galaxy Note 7, whether it’s a replacement device or not, to turn off its high-end smartphone while it investigates the new reports. A man in Kentucky said he woke up to a bedroom full of smoke from a replaced Note 7, and that report came just days after a domestic flight in the US was evacuated after a new device started spewing smoke in the cabin.
Samsung says that current owners “need” to either exchange their phone for another kind of smartphone (one can only imagine the glee with which Apple execs read that) or obtain a full refund. “We are working with relevant regulatory bodies to investigate the recently reported cases involving the Galaxy Note 7,” Samsung wrote in a blog post. “Because consumers’ safety remains our top priority, Samsung will ask all carrier and retail partners globally to stop sales and exchanges of the Galaxy Note 7 while the investigation is taking place.”
It’s still possible Samsung could fix the phone properly, and then roll it back out to consumers later this year, but that now seems very unlikely. RIP Note7.
