Tune in and turn up

Grimes and Wu-Tang legend RZA have both reportedly contributed “sound packs” to a new electronic instrument called Blocks. You would be forgiven for thinking that Blocks, from UK-based startup Roli, sounds less like a form of music composition and more like a children’s toy, as it stands somewhere in between. Imagine electronic LEGOs on a set of touch screens, which are now capable of creating custom sounds from the aforementioned Grimes and RZA.

Blocks consists of three separate pieces, a Lightpad block, a Live block and a Loop block, all of which are connected via iPhone app. Grimes wrote about her passion for the instrument as one that’s, “intuitive and versatile. I’m always on the go, and Blocks is the most powerful mobile production tool I’ve ever used.” It’s a bit complicated to describe, but the video below gives a good idea of what kind of music and functions the Roli Blocks provide:

Be sure to visit the instrument’s online store to order a set for yourself.
