The gripping first trailer for the movie adaptation of Dave Eggers' best-selling novel, The Circle, has been released and it sees the start of Emma Watson's character's descent into a true tech dystopia.

The clip opens up with Tom Hanks channeling a Steve Jobs-like persona as the charismatic Eamon Bailey, owner of a technology company called The Circle. Mae Holland, played by Watson (who is also starring in the Beauty and the Beast live-action remake, FYI,) is one of Bailey's latest employees after passing a job interview which included questions about The Beatles and video games.

We see Bailey on stage musing about his latest invention — a small, portable, high-quality camera that allows the company to view what's happening all around the world — while the camera keeps cutting away to disconcerting clips of Mae stranded in a body of water on a kayak in a storm. It ends with Bailey waxing, "Because knowing is good — but knowing everything is better."

The Circle was directed by James Ponsoldt and will also star John Boyega, Karen Gillan, Patton Oswalt and Bill Paxton. Watch the trailer above.

After you've finished, watch Watson in the Beauty and the Beast trailer below.
