People were understandably ecstatic this week when the lineup for this year’s Coachella Festival was unveiled. It is even more killer than usual, with the headlining acts comprised of Radiohead, Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar. But some rather unfortunate news has just come to light concerning the festival that may halt that excitement in its tracks.
Coachella is part of AEG, a company owned by Philip Anschutz, a man who has been revealed to be a staunch anti-LGBTQ activist and climate change denier. According to The Washington Post, Anschutz has contributed huge sums of money towards groups like the Family Research Council and the National Christian Foundation, both of which work tirelessly towards denying LGBTQ citizens their rights and liberties. His money is also going towards a variety of organizations fighting against climate change and climate science.
While any CEO is, of course, able to believe in whatever he wishes, it may be concerning to the thousands of attendants of the Coachella festival that their money is being directly put towards these organizations. In the same study, The Washington Post confirmed that Anschutz was using his company’s profits to directly fund these groups, which seems in stark contrast to the ‘peace and love’ environment so proudly on display at each year’s festival. How this year’s participating artists will react remains to be seen, but stay tuned for further developments.
