König Souvenir, formerly known as SOUVENIRby, run by the team at König Galerie in Berlin, has released a collection of bright blue hoodies in support of the European Union.
The drop followed a pro-EU talk held by the project, featuring artists Wolfgang Tillmans, Sauerbruch Hutton, Maryam Zaree and Kristoff Ritlewski.
The event was held to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the signing of The Treaties of Rome, which laid the foundation for today’s European Union. On the same day in London, there were protests against Brexit, the formal negotiations of which begin this week.
Alongside the talk, the gallery released the “EUnify” hoodie, a hoodie in the European Union’s signature blue, featuring a broken EU circle — the missing star representing the UK. According to the group, the hoodie “tells not only a story about the EU, but about all broken unities, all broken circles.”
Wolfgang Tillmans had previously released a poster series during the Brexit campaign, which he has now adapted to support the EU in general. At the event, hoodies were available to buy and attendees were encouraged to take home their own Tillmans posters free of charge.
France and Germany have upcoming elections this year, and both races feature a far-right, anti-EU candidate. König Galerie’s aim with the event and hoodie is to foster a shared European identity, which they feel would stem the current nationalistic tendencies sweeping the continent.
The hoodie is available to purchase at König Galerie, St. Agnes, Alexandrinenstraße 118, Berlin.
