Joey Bada$$ is no longer the fresh-faced youth whose 2015 debut studio album, B4.Da.$$, was touted as a return to real New York-centric hip-hop. Since then, the 22-year-old Pro Era collective member has grown up, and so too has his staunchly politicized voice. Between the searing freestyle he delivered over Future’s “Mask Off” last week in L.A. to his latest off-the-top delivery shared only a few days ago, it’s clear that Joey is in prime album mode.
Ahead of the April 7 release, Joey teased fans by debuting a new ScHoolboy Q featured single titled, “Rockabye Baby.” At just under four minutes, the song is a politically charged assessment of institutionalized injustice, poverty, crime and the ever-simmering racial tensions that have historically marred America’s history. And, following in the example of YG, there’s a definitive, “fuck Donald Trump” thrown in for good measure.
