Upcoming French brand BALTIC is about to release its first set of premium watches, inspired by the icy north European sea of the same name.

Traditional with a touch of modern minimalism, BALTIC watches take cues from little-known 1940s models and bring them up to date with intricate design techniques. The brand will initially offer two different models: a 38mm manual-winding chronograph and a 38mm automatic three-hander.

Etienne Malec, the brand’s founder, was inspired to start creating watches through his father, who himself was a keen collector. “It was first out of curiosity that I immersed myself in it, and then grew my desire to get to know my father better through his tastes for watches,” he said. “Some people think watches are ordinary objects, but I am believe they are much more than that.”

Both models are available with many different dial, color and strap variations online over at the brand’s Kickstarter page, and at Colette in Paris in the coming months. They will retail at €399 (approximately $423).

In other watch news, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona returns in “Everose Gold.”
