On Friday, May 19, Uniqlo will begin to unveil 25 winning designs from its Nintendo-themed Uniqlo T-shirt (UT) Grand Prix 2017 competition. The contest, which originally began in 2005, allows anyone regardless of age, gender or nationality to participate.
This year’s competition welcomed over 16,000 entries, as participants created original T-shirt designs inspired by Nintendo’s iconic games and legendary characters, including Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, Animal Crossing, Star Fox, Kirby, Splatoon, and the Pokémon series.
The winning design makes use of a Mario motif, while second and third places center around Splatoon and Legend of Zelda themes respectively. Not only will the winning designs be featured in Uniqlo stores across the globe, but top prize winners received $10,000 USD, an invitation to attend a special awards ceremony in Japan, and a Nintendo Switch system personally signed by Shigeru Miyamoto.
Among the judges for this year’s contest was none other than Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary creator of Super Mario Bros. and other iconic video games.
