Origin stories have become something of a trope when it comes to modern blockbusters. Sure, they’re par for the course when it comes to establishing money-making superhero franchises (take Spider-Man: Homecoming for example, which puts Peter Parker back in the milieu of high school tropes), but obscure bits of history in a mythos can even provide the premise for entire films—which is how we got Rogue One, an entire Star Wars film based off of one line in Episode IV’s opening crawl.
But as fictional universes become more and more fleshed out on the big screen, these environments present new opportunities for storytelling. The Harry Potter franchise has been so successful that author J.K. Rowling even penned an entire play that functions as a sequel, while also telling new tales from other lore like Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
That’s what makes this fan film from Tryangle Films so interesting. Director Gianmaria Pezzato has made an impressive trailer for Voldemort – Origins of the Heir, a fan production that will dive into the early days of Tom Marvolo Riddle, the young wizard who would eventually become Harry Potter’s greatest nemesis. While the films detail a bit of how he rose to power, this film essentially serves as a prequel and adds more insight on how he became so feared that the wizarding world even dared mention his name.
The film’s protagonist is Gryffindor heir Grisha McLaggen—likely related to Cormac McLaggen from the Harry Potter series—and the trailer definitely leaves viewers wanting more. To support the creation of the fan film, Tryangle Films has set up a Paypal Donation link.
