Following an international competition, Danish architectural practice 3XN architects has been appointed to design the new Sydney fish market, which will also be relocated from its current location of Pyrmont to the adjacent side in Blackwattle Bay — a bay located to the south–east of Glebe Island and east of Rozelle Bay on Sydney Harbor in New South Wales, Australia.

Barry Mann, the head of projects portfolio for UrbanGrowth NSW, a corporation owned by the government of New South Wales with responsibility for government-funded property development in the state of New South Wales, Australia commented, “The brief is to rejuvenate Sydney fish market and create a world class food and dining destination on the inner harbor that will be dynamic, sustainable, and sympathetic to the local area.”

Expected to cost more than $250 million and offer mixed-use opportunities that places a strong sense of community, the new open area scheme will become the world’s largest fishmarket once completed, as construction is scheduled to commence in late 2018.

Marking 3XN’s third project in the Australian city, founding partner at 3XN Kim Herforth Nielsen shared, “We are incredibly excited to be working with urbangrowth NSW and Sydney fish market to create not just an authentic fish market, but an iconic destination for Australia.”
