You might remember how we first posted about the I.D. Buzz — Volkswagen’s electric, emission free and fully autonomous reimagining of the classic VW bus — back in January. Back then, the Buzz was just a concept — but now it’s set to become a reality.
The decision was made by VW after fans inundated the company with letters urging them to realize the vehicle. If early projections go to plan, it could be making its way to North American, European and Asian dealerships by 2022. An official name is yet to be announced.
The production version of the concept is expected to remain faithful to the original and will be aimed at environmentally-conscious buyers who require extra storage space. It will be semi-autonomous, meaning it will be able to handle some of the driving responsibilities, but still requires a human to be in control. Additionally, there will be a specialized Cargo version, which will be optimized for handling commercial clients’ goods.
Volkswagen’s North American CEO Hinrich J. Woebcken said of the development:
We are delighted that our parent company has taken the decision to produce the I.D. BUZZ. This vehicle is the perfect balance between emotion, usability and sustainability, while also showcasing our technological leadership. The high seating position, cargo capacity, overall versatility and all-wheel drive option packaged into such an appealing design is just what our customers want from us. And it’s the perfect fit for the zero-emissions American lifestyle.
