Scorsese fans, it's time to get excited. A report has emerged courtesy of Deadline which suggests the director is planning an origin story that will reveal how The Joker became Batman's notorious enemy.

If the piece is to be believed, Warner Bros and DC have been in talks for some time about another Batman Universe spin-off. The story, written by Todd Philips (The Hangover ) and Scott Silver (8 Mile), is said to follow the Joker as a young resident of Gotham City in the '80s. Rather than typical superhero fare, the movie will instead play out like a crime flick, with comparison's already being made to Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight.

An intriguing part is the setting. The intention is to make a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-’80s Gotham City that isn’t meant to feel like a DC movie as much as one of Scorsese’s films from that era, like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or The King Of Comedy

Furthermore, it appears Jared Leto, who played the infamous villain in last year's Suicide Squad, will have no part in filming. Instead, the role will go to a younger actor. (Fans of Leto needn't be disappointed, however, as he will be back for the Suicide Squad sequel and Harley Quinn spin-off.)

Stay posted for further information as we have it.
