Think of a top NBA player’s paycheck and the cash register noise instantly comes to mind. However, the players might not be as flush as you readily assume. A recent ESPN probe, assisted by sports tax expert Robert Raiola, into the annual salaries of the game’s biggest stars reveals some surprising statistics.

Tax, who could forget it? But when it comes to the rich and famous, it’s all too often ignored. Take the case of Stephen Curry: the Golden State Warriors star may gross the most of any NBA player on the court, but after paying Uncle Sam, he drops to number two, making LeBron James the top dog. (After all, California’s hefty taxes make it the Golden State for a reason.)
