Where form meets function

‘Internet art’ can be a fickle thing to define in 2017, a time when really anything can be coined as such. Yet the label carries certain connotations that can be universally recognized; namely, a lo-res aesthetic, glitchy animation, and a general sense of being off-putting (a digital surrealism if you will). By those standards, “Trap Star,” the latest visual from rising pop-star Wes Period, is a contender for a masterpiece of the genre. Watch its world premiere below.

Period, an LA-based artist discovered by Justin Tranter – a songwriter behind the likes of Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez and Gwen Stefani to name a few – has had one serious come-up in 2017. At the top of the year he released his first album, Late Bloomer, and has followed it up with a steady stream of singles. “Trap Star” is but the latest of these, and it showcases Period’s wily, offbeat sense of humor thanks to lines the chorus: “You say you want a trap star / But you don’t wanna get trapped.” Of course if you watched the video above, that should say all there is to say about his wit.
