Amongst the many intricacies of Puerto Rico’s infrastructure being ravaged in the wake of Hurricane Maria, the island’s electrical grid was one factor to take particularly high damage.

Quick to see such opportunities as a chance to further implement the use of Tesla products, having already introduced systemwide solar projects on the Hawaiian Island of Kauai, Elon Musk has made an offer to now help Puerto Rico’s damaged electrical grid. When asked by The Hastings Group’s Scott Stapf if the island’s grid could be rebuilt with “independent solar & battery systems,” Musk was quick to respond with the following:

The Tesla team has done this for many smaller islands around the world, but there is no scalability limit, so it can be done for Puerto Rico too. Such a decision would be in the hands of the PR govt, PUC, any commercial stakeholders and, most importantly, the people of PR.— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) 5 October 2017

The Twitter exchange then became somewhat more official when Puerto Rico’s governor, Ricardo Rossello, reached out to Musk given the fact that an astonishing 95% of the island is still expected to be without power.

Sounds good, I look forward to talking later today— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) 6 October 2017
