This past weekend, McDonald’s announced it would be rolling out its fabled Szechuan Sauce — made popular once again by Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty cartoon — for one day only. This seemingly innocuous news caused fans of the show to turn into near-rabid maniacs, with people traveling miles and waiting in line for hours to get their hands on the condiment.
Such demand was unforeseen by the Golden Arches, with most locations selling out of Szechuan Sauce instantly. Unfortunately, this led to a small number of people acting like assholes, with multiple reports of protests and staff abuse. Microcosmic of how incomprehensibly embarrassing the entire situation had become was the fact that adults — like, actual fully-fledged adults — could be seen inside some stores chanting “Get More Sauce!” Not to be outdone, others decided to waste valuable police time by picketing outside.
As you could imagine, those lucky enough to get their hands on the sauce stood to make a healthy profit. Within hours, single packets of szechuan sauce could be seen selling for over $250 on sites like eBay, with one seller making a profit of $850 for three packets.
If you behaved appropriately but missed out, then fear not, for McDonald’s intends to roll out more sauce over winter. In a statement, the food chain said: “Szechuan sauce is coming back once again this winter. And instead of being one-day-only we’re bringing more – a lot more – so that any fan who’s willing to do whatever it takes for Szechuan sauce will only have to ask for it.”
The news comes as a boost to most normal fans of the show intrigued by the product, and a blow to those who managed to get some over the weekend but, for unknown reasons, opted not to cash in.
