Where the runway meets the street

The staple of Wall Street bankers (think Gordon Gekko from ’80s cult film, Wall Street), the double-breasted coat is back this fall season. Designers such as Demna Gvasalia have revived the much-maligned jacket, putting it back on the map of men’s outerwear, next to puffers and parkas.

Historically, the six-buttoned jacket was associated with the military and has long since attracted authority figures, including royalty — all drawn to its powerful allure. For the 21st-century man, the double-breasted coat can exude a more formal vibe than a single-breasted one, which opens up new possibilities for styling with a streetwear-heavy wardrobe.

Today, streetwear brands like Stüssy are giving new life to the power piece. Take the brand’s camo coat (see item five below) – perhaps an ironic nod to the coat’s military roots, is further evidence of the double-breasted coat’s ability to blend new and old styles while maintaining its potent edge.
