It seems rather apropos that YouTuber, Nerdwriter1, has recently put together a comprehensive look at the filmmaking techniques of David Fincher - as his Netflix series, Mindhunter, just premiered on the streaming service and already has all the makings of the next "must watch" program.
While directors are admittedly in service to the story, the analysis reveals Fincher's visual language which combines slick camera work with character movements. When combined, Nerdwriter1 asserts that this cohesion helps Fincher "hijack your eyes" and leads to a better connection to what is happening to the people on screen.
Although one might contend that what Fincher is doing isn't necessarily groundbreaking, it does reveal a style that relies on pinpoint timing between his actors and cinematographer - which is probably why he is known for doing so many takes.
