The Rio 2016 Olympics are well underway with tens of thousands of fans filling venues across the city hoping for their countries' teams and athletes to be crowned victorious. But pretty soon those stadiums are going to be empty, and if these photos of abandoned Olympic buildings from previous Games are anything to go by, then their future looks bleak.
For the most part, the photos capture what happened when host countries like Greece completely disregarded any idea of sustainable venues, and instead thought only about how the country will look on television cameras, leaving tax payers to foot the bill.
However in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, for the 1984 Winter Olympics, it wasn't so much terrible planning and mismanagement that left buildings in ruin, but war. The Games were supposedly a symbol of "peace and hope" but war broke out less than 10 years later leaving Sarajevo under siege. Sites were left to deteriorate, store weapons and bury bodies, and now act as graveyards and targets for vandals.
This is the real "Olympic Legacy." Check out the photos below.
