Alice Glass has been through hell and back after a tumultuous year of legal battles with ex-bandmate Ethan Kath. This past February, she won a court case against the Crystal Castles member after he sued her for defamation. As she previously stated on Twitter, it was truly a “victory for survivors of abuse and sexual misconduct.”
Today, she returns to the spotlight once again with a new single called “Mine”. RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Violet Chachki stars alongside the singer-songwriter in the accompanying visual for the track. Glass further elaborated on the inspiration behind the song in a press release, stating that it’s about “someone who hurts themselves in an attempt to regain control of of their own life and experiences.”
She adds, “It’s a form of self-sacrifice and also an act of personal freedom for someone who feels completely out of control. I do not condone self-harm, but like a lot of my music ‘Mine’ is about my struggle with coming out of an intensely abusive relationship. In the ritual of hurting myself or taking something from myself I am at the very least in control of that act, when in so many other aspects of my life I felt hopeless.”
This marks Glass’ first new material since her self-titled solo EP came out last year. Re-familiarize yourself with her incredible work and watch the music video above.
