Following reports of poor power performance in older phone models, Apple has announced customers with an iPhone 6 and above would be eligible for battery swaps. Despite this confirmation, the company failed to reveal how it would qualify which batteries were eligible for the discounted replacement of $29.
Currently, Apple provides replacements on the basis of a diagnostics test run by the Apple Genius Bar. The test checks if the battery can retain 80 percent of its original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles — any tested phones that cannot retain the said percentage is then eligible for a replacement.
However, Apple has now told MacRumors that it will replace batteries regardless of the diagnostic test results. While the announcement was welcomed by many, other customers complained of having to pay the original service price of $79. Although anecdotal rumors are surfacing of Apple refunding the price difference, this has yet to be confirmed by the company.
