Jason Momoa-fronted blockbuster Aquaman is officially the highest-grossing DC Comics movie of all time, taking in $1.091 billion at the box office and surpassing The Dark Knight Rises, the previous DC champ.
Before the fish-talking superhero started banking big bucks for DC, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises were the DC universe's biggest cinematic hits, taking $1.004 billion in 2008 and $1.084 billion in 2012 respectively. As of this weekend, Aquaman, despite its middling reviews, is more lucrative than a modern classic considered by many to be the best comic book movie of all time.
The numbers place Aquaman in eighth position when ranking the takings of superhero films overall, falling behind Marvel's major box office winners, the Avengers franchise, Black Panther, Iron Man 3, and Captain America: Civil War.
Worth noting is that it's the worldwide takings that have elevated Aquaman to such a level. Domestically, the film had the second-lowest opening of all DCEU films, with only Justice League doing worse in the US.
