This past weekend saw two new Banksy murals appear at the Barbican in London, with the elusive artist paying homage to Jean-Michel Basquiat.
The artworks coincide with a retrospective Basquiat exhibition which is slated to open on September 20. In true Banksy style, the pieces are heavily sardonic, with the first depicting a figure similar to the New York artist's 1982 Boy and Dog in a Johnnypump being stopped and searched by police. The second mural is a Ferris wheel with the caption: "Major new Basquiat show opens at the Barbican - a place that is normally very keen to clean any graffiti from its walls."
It's been a busy month for Banksy, having revealed a new anti-weapon artwork only last week. When you take Banksy and Basquiat's mutual distaste for the authorities and street graffiti backgrounds, the British artist's fandom comes as little surprise.
If you're in London, you can check out Basquiat's exhibition from September 21 through January 28, 2018.
