The World Cup is finally over, and what a classic it's been. France lifted the trophy on July 15 in Moscow, beating Croatia 4-2 in the final thanks to goals by Antoine Griezmann, Paul Pogba, Kylian Mbappe, and an own-goal by Mario Mandžukić. On the field, we were treated to breathtaking football, lots of drama, and a deserving winner — France collecting the trophy for the second time after winning on home soil in 1998. Off the field, meanwhile, we enjoyed plenty of beer and rib-tickling memes.

Before the tournament, we ranked the best World Cup kits and gave you a closer look at all the stadiums, and we also thought we'd have a place to keep all the best World Cup memes and social media gags from throughout the tournament. Whether created in response to an embarrassing early exit, an incredible piece of skill, or whatever else the tournament might have given us, the best internet reactions to World Cup 2018 can be found right here.

The final had it all: an own-goal, a VAR-assisted penalty, a hilarious goalkeeping blunder, and a blistering strike by Croatia's Ivan Perišić to tie the game at 1-1 after 28 minutes. In the end, though, France has added a coveted second star to its jersey and will spend the next four years as world champions.

Surprisingly, social media reactions were mixed. Some users chose to take a more lighthearted approach to the result, while others took the chance to highlight certain political and social issues — most notably immigration and the refugee crisis affecting Europe at the moment.
