South Korean design duo Kyu Shin and Ji Park showed their SS19 Collection at London Fashion Week: Men’s over the weekend. The show notes opened with a line from Franz Kafka’s 1967 book Letters To Felice: “You are at once both the quiet and the confusion of my heart”.
The line from by Kafka is an expression of how first love can feel conflicting, maddening and extreme, and BLINDNESS’ SS19 collection continued these themes in a number of ways.
Firstly the choice of fabrics were at a juxtaposition. Feminine, transparent, tulle-like material, used on pants, body suits, coats, capes, tunics, and dresses, was layered and styled with tartan, vests, blazers and oversized Oxfords shirts. Secondly, the color palette had suggestions of romance — i.e. dusty pink — but was also realized in all-black looks, which suggested mourning and grief, a nod to the painful anguish that also comes with falling in love for the first time.
The designs were theatrical, romantic and paid little attention to societal norms of gender expectations. Perhaps, the most striking elements were the pants, ruffled and stitched up the back of the leg to give a concertina effect, a wild new silhouette that, to this writer’s knowledge, hasn’t been used in menswear in quite in the same way before.
