After months of teasing new material, Devonté “Dev” Hynes has finally announced the return of Blood Orange. This morning, the British artist took to Instagram to formally announce the release of his fourth full-length album titled Negro Swan. The record is officially slated to drop on August 24 via Domino and is currently available for pre-order.
The album artwork is a striking image of a black man sitting in the front window of a car with a white du-rag on his head and wings clipped to his back. Back in February, Hynes put out two tracks in honor of Black History Month called “Christopher & 6th” and “JUNE 12TH.” Hynes was recently featured on "Hun43rd" off A$AP Rocky's TESTING album. He also received credit as a co-writer on Mac Miller's recent single "Self Care."
Speaking on the upcoming release, Hynes delivered the following statement: “My newest album is an exploration into my own and many types of black depression, an honest look at the corners of black existence, and the ongoing anxieties of queer/people of color,” he said. “A reach back into childhood and modern traumas, and the things we do to get through it all. The underlying thread through each piece on the album is the idea of hope, and the lights we can try to turn on within ourselves with a hopefully positive outcome of helping others out of their darkness.”
Negro Swan is the follow-up to Blood Orange's 2016 album Freetown Sound which explored different aspects of Hynes' experience as a black man living in America. Stay tuned for more details about the LP to be revealed.
