Every week, we at Highsnobiety take some time to highlight one of our favorite emerging brands. Last week, we featured workwear label Dickies Construct, and now we’ve decided to shine a light on Brooklyn-based L’ENCHANTEUR.
The durag (also stylized as “du-rag”, “dorag” or “do-rag”) is more than just a simple piece of cloth. It is deep-rooted in black culture and can be found at any beauty supply in the States, Africa, and Europe. Similar to the bonnet for black women, the durag helps countless black men keep their waves, cornrows, and dreads in check. When it comes to black hair, preservation is key, and the durag is the first line of protection against the friction of pillows.
Usually, durags retail at super affordable price points — generally no more than a couple of bucks. And while they were originally intended to only be worn around the house, they quickly became a fashion statement within black culture, adopted by rappers, athletes, and celebrities. A$AP Ferg can even be seen tying his durag on the cover of his album, Still Striving.
Taking the affordable essential and turning it into a luxury asset, Brooklyn’s L’ENCHANTEUR has created a line of new, high-end durags. Created in 2012 by twin sisters Dynasty and Soull Ogun, the brand is the product of years spent perfecting their skills in textile design and jewelry-making respectively. The statement piece of their collection — the L’E durag — comes made from silk, velvet, or denim, retailing for up to $130.
But L’ENCHANTEUR’s designs don’t begin and end with the durag. The Ogun sisters’ brand features accessories such as hats and crowns, as well as apparel, jewelry, textiles, and art. Drawing inspiration from everything from astrology, architecture, archeology, magic, and mythology. Every piece is created to leave a mark on society, while also documenting the times we live in.
Whether you’re rocking at home or outdoors, if like most black folks here at Highsnobiety you cannot wait to rock a fancy durag, feast your eyes on some of our favorites available at L’ENCHANTEUR’s online shop below.
