Last week, Brooklyn bred artist Chloe Lilac made her formal debut with the release of Manic Pixie Dream. The RCA signee is an indie pop star on the rise that has been blowing up on Spotify with anthems about women’s empowerment, swiping for romantic connections, and struggling with mental illness. Today, we’re premiering the accompanying visual for the EP’s title track. Lilac explained the inspiration behind the moody song in an email to Highsnobiety.

“This video symbolizes how destructive the manic pixie dream girl trope is in relationships because of how unrealistic it is and how it sets really toxic expectations for young women,” she said. “I was finding that the people I was dating expected me to be a manic pixie dream girl instead of a real, complex, multi-dimensional person.”

Lilac recently performed at SXSW in Austin, Texas. Scroll down to watch the video unfold.
