The upcoming live-action Little Mermaid has found its Ariel. 19 year-old actor and singer Halle Bailey, who is one half of the R&B duo Chloe x Halle and stars on the TV show Grownish, will be taking on the role as the iconic mermaid.

Rob Marshall, director of Disney's Mary Poppins, Mary Poppins Returns, will helm the film with Melissa McCarthy, Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina in talks to star in the film.

Marshall released a statement praising Bailey, saying, "After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role.”

For those upset that Halle doesn't resemble the animated Ariel from the original 1989 film, remember that the character is a fictional half fish being. She's not real. She can be portrayed by anyone. Thanks. Now, who do we have to talk to about casting Idris Elba as King Triton?

Production for the film will begin in early 2020, but fans have already taken to social media to share their excitement. See below.
