Elon Musk and Grimes made their public debut at this year’s Met Gala. According to Page Six, the Tesla founder has been “quietly dating” the singer-songwriter over the past month.

The two reportedly bonded online, following a joke Musk had planned to make on Twitter regarding the dangers of artificial intelligence. Musk discovered that the Vancouver-born artist had already made the same gag three years prior, and subsequently reached out to her.

The joke centered on the Roko’s Basilisk thought experiment, which considers a future in which all-powerful AI punishes those who did not help it into existence. Long story short, “His joke was to merge this thought experiment with a pun using “Rococo,” referring to the ornate French 18th-century baroque style, perhaps pointing out that both concepts are complex, too extreme and ridiculous,” Page Six writes.

In 2015, Grimes made a similar reference in the music video for her song “Flesh Without Blood”. In it, she plays a character called Rococo Basilisk, whom she told Fuse, “is doomed to be eternally tortured by an artificial intelligence, but she’s also kind of like Marie Antoinette.”

Earlier this year, Musk publicly expressed his admiration for the artist via Twitter. In reference to her “Venus Fly” music video featuring Janelle Monáe, the SpaceX founder called it the “best music video art I’ve seen in a while.” The two have since shared further public exchanges on Twitter.

And now, the pair stepped out together at the Met Gala. This year’s theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” and in true fashion, Grimes stepped out in a black ensemble with a Tesla choker necklace to match. Musk also confirmed their coupling by tweeting “Rococo basilisk.”

Naturally, the internet did what it does best and responded with mixed reactions. Some users aimed to make light of the news, others argued that their coupling is proof we live in a simulation, and the rest found a good opportunity to make memes. As always, you can peep some of the thoughts below.

Some could see the positives in the relationship

Others were not so thrilled

This person had bigger fish to fry

And a select few just wanted to make memes
