Eminem recently surprised fans with a new 13-track album titled Kamikaze, which included shots at fellow musicians Lil Pump, Lil Yachty, Lil Xan, and Tyler, The Creator.
Social media reactions were quick to follow, specifically around jabs at Tyler that were characterized by many as homophobic. On the album’s 10th track “Fall,” Eminem spits “Tyler create nothin’, I see why you called yourself a f****t, bitch / It’s not just ‘cause you lack attention, it’s ‘cause you worship D12’s balls, you’re sacrilegious.” The track also features Bon Iver frontman Justin Vernon, who spoke out about Eminem’s lyrics, along with many others who shared their opinions on Twitter.
When previous questioned on his use of such slurs, Eminem explained to Rolling Stone in 2013, “Those kind of words, when I came up battle-rappin’ or whatever, I never equated those words [with being homosexual]… It was more like calling someone a bitch or a punk or asshole.”
Elton John once revealed that Eminem gifted him a set of diamond-encrusted sex toys, and when speaking with Zane Lowe, John went on to state “For me Eminem was never homophobic. I’ll fight for anyone who is misunderstood and misrepresented by the idiots out there.”
Tyler himself has been criticized for using the word f****t, and explained to Arsenio Hall, “That’s just a word, you can take the power out of that word. The way that I see things, it’s you chose to be offended if you care more about stuff like that.”
Nonetheless, reactions continue to roll in, calling for Eminem to be held accountable.
