Facebook is changing the names of Instagram and WhatsApp in a bid to make its platforms more transparent, The Information has said. The social sites will now be called "Instagram from Facebook" and "WhatsApp from Facebook." The renaming will not affect how either app operates.

The move will make users more aware of who owns the apps they use. Up until this point both Instagram and Whatspp were branded independently from their parent company, which perhaps helped them sidestep the recent privacy scandals that affected Facebook. While that's clearly a good thing for them, Zuckerberg is reportedly annoyed that Facebook doesn't get credit for the growth of Instagram and WhatsApp.

“We want to be clearer about the products and services that are part of Facebook,” Bertie Thomson, a Facebook spokeswoman, told The Information.
