John Cena will be joining the next installment of The Fast and the Furious franchise, as confirmed by the man himself on Twitter.
“It’s an incredible honor to join this franchise and this family,” wrote the WWE star, paying tribute to the Fast & Furious franchise which has now been going strong for close to 20 years.
A previous Instagram post from Vin Diesel hinted at the news. Dressed as his character Dominic Toretto, Diesel said “Guys, as you know, I’m always thinking fast, and thinking about the responsibility of making something iconic and deserving of your loyalty.
“I know this sounds crazy, but every blue moon I feel like Pablo up there sends me someone. Another soldier in the fight for truth. Today, someone came by Toretto Gym that speaks to what Pablo would have brought.” Diesel finishes up before panning the camera to John Cena in the background.
“Pablo” refers to Paul Walker, who played Brian O’Conner in the series. Walker died in an unrelated car crash in 2013 during the time Furious 7 was being filmed.
According to Deadline, Cena will play a “badass” in the upcoming movie. The same article goes on to state that one person who won’t be involved in the production is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
Fast & Furious 9 is slated to release May 22, next year. The ninth installment marks the return of director Justin Lin who directed Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious, Fast Five, and Fast & Furious 6.
