Editor’s Notes: To welcome Fear of God’s latest ESSENTIALS collection — “California Winter 2019” — which includes a wealth of wardrobe staples and a collaboration on two pairs of Converse Chuck Taylors, Highsnobiety linked up with brand founder Jerry Lorenzo to find out what makes this season tick.
Lorenzo touched on everything from his Chucks design details to Cali winters, and his collaborator Shaniqwa Jarvis. Scroll below for the full interview.
What makes the Fear of God ESSENTIALS Converse different from a regular Converse? Are there any hidden design features?
Nothing hidden, very straightforward. An honest approach and a color-blocking system we used over three years ago on our [Vans] Fear of God ESSENTIALS Sk8-Hi. The challenge was to make something not too opinionated but strong enough to be set apart. Hopefully a new essential staple to your wardrobe.
A matte leather tongue that matches the finish of the matte rubber toe against the classic Chuck Taylor Converse is a simple detail most kids appreciate. The loop in the back we added [because] I think people want them on all Chucks, so the laces don’t roll up on your ankle. Also, we used the 70 shape as it’s my favorite of the Chuck Taylors.
Less is more with a classic silhouette like the Chuck Taylor. How do you approach working on a shoe like that?
[We] wanted to try and strip all opinion while having a strong opinion. Simple is the hardest thing to do. We wanted to make an instant classic, not a loud hyped shoe.
What does Converse mean to you and how does that tie into the Cali lifestyle?
Exactly that. An essential the California lifestyle.
What does the collection title “California Winter” mean to you?
Hoodie weather. [Laughs] Not puffers. We have a slightly different set of rules here California for our 70-degree winters. The collection spoke back to that.
Why did you choose to work with Shaniqwa Jarvis? What is it you admire about her?
Because she’s one of the best photographers out now, and an even better person. I’m focused on working with good people who happen to be very talented.
Is there a story behind the photographs found on some items in the holiday collection?
With the postcards, we wanted something soothing against all the loud graphics currently in the market.
What does authenticity mean in a streetwear setting, and how do you apply this to an ESSENTIALS line?
The name speaks to the honesty of what the line is. It’s not a diffusion of Fear of God but an extension. The best basics at accessible pricing.
You’ve been working with PacSun for a few seasons now. Can we expect to see the partnership continue? If so, will you be offering more exclusive product drops there in the future?
Yep. And yes.
