The Mill is looking to transform automotive advertising by presenting BLACKBIRD, the first fully-adjustable car rig that creates photoreal CG cars. The rig can in turn be shot anytime, anywhere, without the need to rely on a physical subject vehicle. The production tool is ensured not to sacrifice quality or direction by replacing a given car.
But how is all of this accomplished? BLACKBIRD can quickly transform its chassis to match the exact length and width of almost any car. It's then powered by an electric motor that's programmed to imitate acceleration curves and gearing shifts, while the adjustable suspension alters ride height, rigidity and dampening to replicate standard driving characteristics.
Due to its camera assortment and tailor-made stabilization unit, BLACKBIRD is able to capture quality footage and data with ease. Both high dynamic range imagery and 3D laser scanning generates a virtual version of the environment, producing realistic CG renderings.
After getting your first look at the truly innovative BLACKBIRD via the video above, head on over to The Mill to investigate the rig further.
