As of Monday, January 1, it is now unlawful to pay men more than women for the same job in Iceland. This in turn makes Iceland the first country to legalize equal pay between genders.
Al Jazeera points out that under the new law companies and government agencies who employ a minimum of 25 people must obtain government certification of their equal pay policies. Failure to do so will result in fines.
“The legislation is basically a mechanism that companies and organizations … evaluate every job that’s being done, and then they get a certification after they confirm the process if they are paying men and women equally,” explains Dagny Osk Aradottir Pind, board member of the Icelandic Women’s Rights Association. “It’s a mechanism to ensure women and men are being paid equally. We have had legislation saying that pay should be equal for men and women for decades now but we still have a pay gap.”
For nearly a decade, Iceland has been recognized by the World Economic Forum as the world’s most gender-equal country. Its current wage gap will reportedly be completely eradicated by 2020.
