A new study has confirmed what many of us have secretly thought while scrolling through the 'gram: people choose vacation spots based on potential likes.

Published by the the University of Georgia, the study interviewed 758 people, asking them why they would like to visit Cuba and when. Cuba was chosen as an example of a hype vacation spot because the country has just opened up to U.S. tourists, and therefore it's seemingly cooler to go now before all your friends have got there.

Respondents could say whether they wanted to visit in one year, within the next five years, or the next 10. They were then asked a series of follow-up questions to find out their true motivations for the trip. Interestingly, those who wanted to go within the next year cared more about social capital than the actual country, while those content to travel within the next 5 to 10 years weren't too obsessed with the potential likes.
