Jaden Smith dropped a five-track album featuring “electric” versions of tracks from his debut full-length SYRE earlier this summer, and the 20-year-old rapper/actor appeared on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 show for an interview, where his new song “BACK ON MY SH*T” also premiered.

Delving on a variety of topics, the young artist spoke about his forthcoming album, ERYS, his dad, Will Smith, and his 50th birthday on Tuesday, and more. View a few takeaways from the conversation below, as well as to listen to the full interview and the single “BACK ON MY SH*T” via Apple Music.

On the upcoming ERYS album and the new sound…

“I like to do it all. I like to experiment and stuff but at the end of the day, the people have spoken on what they like from me so I try to come really, really hard. I’m just tryna lead up until ERYS. You know, so that people can kind of start to slowly make that transition with me into the more rap world…

ERYS is going to be just extremely hard. Just every song, back to back, high tempo, a lot of bass like just crazy.”

On experimenting with fashion…

“I really want to just continue pushing the masses, inspiring people to be like, ‘Hey, you can do whatever you want to do.’ If you want to wear this, or you want to wear that. And if they say that you can’t, it doesn’t matter. We’re going to think they’re cool. Even if everybody says you’re not cool. That’s what it’s all about.”

On his dad, Will Smith, turning 50 and the checklist of things his dad wants to do before it’s too late…

“He is bungee jumping out of a helicopter over the Grand Canyon. I think the checklist has just started now that he turned 50. It’s only been the past few months that he’s started the checklist thing.”

On the new song, “BACK ON MY SH*T”…
