Charlotte, North Carolina may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of rap music, but Jalen Santoy is certainly putting it on the map. Growing up in a musical household with a strong jazz influence, Santoy began recording music when he was 15 years old.
He first gained recognition with his debut record God, which caught the attention of Big Pooh and music publications. His 2017 EP Charlie Eastern brought songs like “Off the Glass” and “Foreplay” which has seen over 50 million streams and is a staple on Spotify’s Most Necessary playlist. Now, we’ve got the exclusive premiere of the video for his latest single “Doors of Perception”, a certified bop, in our humble opinion.
Over email, Jalen Santoy explained what his latest single “Doors of Perception” means to him: “‘Doors of Perception’ is my way of walking you into my reality. The first bar of the song starts off with, “they want me rapping bout these diamonds, diamonds keep saying I’m conscious,” and in today’s climate of hip-hop, that’s what seems necessary. Of course, I understand the appeal, but why not find new ways to talk about it?”
