The Clown Prince of Crime looks set to receive his own spinoff film. According to Variety, Warner Bros is diving back into the DC universe, with plans for a Jared Leto-starring Joker solo movie.
Leto first appeared as the Joker to mixed reactions in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, with fans pointing out his role was little more than a glorified cameo given lack of screen time, and naysayers saying both the film and Joker sucked. In an attempt to rectify the matter, sources told Variety that the actor “is set to star and exec produce an untitled standalone film, paving the way for future movies branching from Suicide Squad.”
While specific plot details remain unknown, reports suggest the studio is looking to expand the Suicide Squad world with a series of installments. Last year, it was revealed that Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn would be the first Suicide Squad member to star in a solo film, which will be directed by Cathy Yan and based on the Birds of Prey comics.
Similarly, it emerged last August that Warner Bros is also developing a Joker origin story without Leto. Deadline revealed that Martin Scorsese will produce, with Todd Phillips and Scott Silver co-writing, but another, possibly younger actor would play the villain in his early years.
Leto fans need not worry, though, as there will be plenty of his Joker to go round with this spinoff and Suicide Squad 2, which is slated to hit theaters next year.
