Controversy follows Kanye West like thunder follows lightning, which is to say that the two have a symbiotic yet inevitable relationship. At the time of this writing, the internet is currently ablaze with his latest debatable act: issuing a casting call for YEEZY Season 4 asking only for multiracial women to come audition. But the crown jewels of his controversies have of course been his now-infamous onstage rants, an art form he has expanded on and perfected since his fateful interruption of Taylor Swift so many moons ago. But amazingly, Kanye has just given his most uplifting, positive speech yet.
The pep talk came midway through his set at last night’s Boston stop of his 'Saint Pablo' tour. West made it halfway through his track “Runaway” before putting the music on hold to wax poetic about the healing powers of self-love. “We only got 100 years left here, if we’re lucky,” he began seriously, “We need to start thinking of ways to change the way we treat each other, the way we all to each other, the way we talk about each other.” It’s a grim sentiment, but one that is quite clearly a message of hope in a world running singularly short on them.
Kanye’s more recent speeches have concerned his unparalleled genius and his desire to run for president in 2020, which puts this self-love diatribe among his most selfless yet. But being Kanye, he of course finds time to mention his awesome he is. Many times over.
