The America’s Cup is the oldest trophy in international sport dating to 1851, where it's races between two sailing yachts. One yacht, known as the defender, represents the yacht club that currently holds the America's Cup and the second yacht, known as the challenger, represents the yacht club that is challenging for the cup.
This year, Louis Vuitton unveils a brand new trophy, and its trunk, to be awarded to the winning team of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Challenger Playoffs, taking place on Sunday, June 4 through Monday, June 12, 2017 in Bermuda.
Five challengers for the 35th America’s Cup Match consist of Land Rover BAR, Emirates Team New Zealand, Artemis Racing, SoftBank Team Japan and Groupama Team France -- while the defender is ORACLE TEAM USA, winner of the 34th America’s Cup.
In terms of the trophy's build which was crafted by British goldsmith and silversmith Thomas Lyte, the cup is composed of 10kg of sterling silver, that stands at 70 cm high. The highly polished and satin-finished metal trophy depicts a vivid clash of passing sails to comprise its profile. Additionally, it's also reflective of Louis Vuitton’s famous Gaston ‘V’ mark, which is a symbol drafted by Gaston Vuitton in the 1930’s to encapsulate the House’s values Volez, Voguez,Voyagez - or Fly, Sail, Travel.
Furthermore, a special monogram trunk handmade by three craftsman in France that required over 400 hours of craftwork encases the Challenger’s Trophy and it also incorporates the Gaston 'V' in red on the front. A blue microfiber interior reflects the color of the water and coordinates with Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Trophy case which also has the red 'V' and blue interior.
The winner for the trophy will be declared on Monday, June 12, 2017 in Bermuda.
