maharishi has chosen New York City to be the home of its first international flagship retail store. Located on Lispenard Street in Tribeca, maharishi built the two-level boutique inside an existing loft building, all while preserving the exterior.
The two levels of the NYC flagship are defined by a grid of wooded cabinetry, while a mezzanine levitates above the space near the center. maharishi collaborated with New York’s Abruzzo Bodziak Architects to bring its vision to life, drawing from formal Japanese gardens and military supply warehouses, in addition to historic New York City stores, some of which were similarly lined from floor to ceiling with cabinetry. Furthermore, mirrors are positioned throughout the store to offer visual depth and provide views of the clothing from both sides.
maharishi plays on its disruptive pattern of camouflage by painting the cabinetry military olive green, as the pine plywood lining is left raw to showcase the natural graining. From there, a Japanese custom-woven stand cotton fills each section, which can be converted from display cabinet to storage.
maharishi’s New York City flagship, which currently houses the British label’s FW19 collection, is now open to the public.
